 Increasing Member Involvement

Building a Thriving Membership Community is a program designed to address the critical need members have to learn how to make the most of their membership. The components of this program are built from interviewing literally hundreds of active and inactive members over many years from all disciplines.

While being sensitive to all five stages of membership development (prospecting, recruiting, orienting, involving and renewing), this program focuses specifically on the "orienting" stage and conveys three critical principles or messages to members:

  1. Members are citizens of a distinctive membership community;
  2. The association is a vehicle for them to achieve their goals; and
  3. Both are mutually responsible for making it happen.

The program includes the following:

  • Assess the association's readiness to align member interest with opportunities for involvement.
  • Adjust the orientation module (click here to review template) to support the association's culture, scope and readiness.
  • Conduct orientation in pilot sites to test member response and ability of organization to activate members.
  • Evaluate results and determine changes necessary to increase effectiveness; standardize for ongoing use.
  • Repeat orientation session using it as a "train-the-trainer opportunity for volunteer and staff leaders.
